Fredericton Trap & Skeet Club

PROPOSAL for YOUTH PROGRAM

Objective:

As members of this club, we all have an interest in trying to ensure that our facilities will continue to prosper in serving the interests of future generations. A youth program will serve to introduce young people to the sport of recreational shotgun shooting and the support systems needed to sustain this activity.

Definition of Youth:

Any person less than 19 years of age

Any student less than 25 years of age

Program Proposal:

The program should not designed and offered at zero cost to the participants, as this could easily be misconstrued as having “no value”; however, reduced cost is seen as having real  benefit.

As for club membership, no changes are proposed. FTSC already offers family memberships and youth memberships; however, each recognized individual must be a member of FTSC and should have a specific membership card identifying them as “youth”.

All club shoots should have a youth entry should be 50% of regular entry for targets.

Training/ Coaching/ Mentoring:

A committee is needed from the outset to design the elements of the program - both the administrative and technical components. As well there needs to be a suite of designated FTSC members as instructors/ coaches/mentors. At least one session per month should be provided to provide structured training to youth as a group; however, an instructor should accompany or shadow a youth member, or group, on the ranges at all times.

OPTION 1

This option is based on 15 participants shooting 100 rounds, and providing their own ammo.

Targets:

50% of FTSC rates. Based on 2007 rates, this would be $3 over the counter for 25, or $20 for a shoot card – applicable to trap, skeet, and/or sporting clays.

Ammo:

Regular club rates or provide their own.

Expected cost to FTSC:

Based on 15 participants, shooting 100 rounds

Targets: $200 lost revenue per individual, but club cost for targets is covered

Ammo: no cost – shooter provides own ammo

Total cost to the club is projected to be $0, with potentially $3000 lost revenue

The “potential” argument against considering lost revenue as a factor is that the club would not receive this revenue anyway because the shooting would not likely occur.

OPTION 2

This option is based on 15 participants, shooting 100 rounds and FTSC discounting 25 boxes ammo

Targets:

50% of FTSC rates. Based on 2007 rates, this would be $3 over the counter for 25, or $20 for a shoot card – applicable to trap, skeet, and/or sporting clays.

Ammo:

$3 off of club rates for all regular shooting for up to 25 boxes. Based on current rates, this would be $3 cost per box to the shooter, but could escalate, pending ammo prices..

50 rounds

Expected cost to FTSC:

Targets: $200 lost revenue per individual, but club cost for targets is covered

Ammo: 25 rounds @ $3 loss = $75 per individual

Total cost to the club for Option 2 is projected to be $1125, with potentially $4125 lost revenue

OPTION 3

This option is based on 15 participants, shooting 100 rounds, and FTSC discounting 50 boxes of ammo

Targets:

50% of FTSC rates. Based on 2007 rates, this would be $3 over the counter for 25, or $20 for a shoot card – applicable to trap, skeet, and/or sporting clays.

Ammo:

$3 off of club rates for all regular shooting for up to 50 boxes. Based on current rates, this would be $3 cost per box to the shooter, but could escalate, pending ammo prices..

50 rounds

Expected cost to FTSC:

Targets: $200 lost revenue per individual, but club cost for targets is covered

Ammo: 50 rounds @ $3 loss = $150 per individual

Total cost to the club for Option 3 is projected to be $2250, with potentially $5250 lost revenue

OPTION 4

This option is based on 15 participants, shooting 100 rounds, and FTSC discounting 100 boxes of ammo

Targets:

50% of FTSC rates. Based on 2007 rates, this would be $3 over the counter for 25, or $20 for a shoot card – applicable to trap, skeet, and/or sporting clays.

Ammo:

$3 off of club rates for all regular shooting for up to 100 boxes. Based on current rates, this would be $3 cost per box to the shooter, but could escalate, pending ammo prices..

Expected cost to FTSC:

Based on 15 participants, shooting 100 rounds:

Targets: $200 lost revenue per individual, but club cost for targets is covered

Ammo: 100 rounds @ $3 loss = $300 per individual

Total cost to the club for Option 4 is projected to be $4500 for 15 participants, with  potentially $7500 lost revenue

Recommendation:

This is our first attempt at a youth program and there is a need to make sure that whatever level of support is provided to the youth that it is doable and that it has the full support of the membership. If we are short on the commitments in the first year of the program, we can expect the enthusiasm to diminish in future years.

Once a program is sanctioned, a notice needs to be circulated to the membership actively seeking participants. As well, a notice should be posted on our website, outlining the program and services being offered and a contact for same.

With this in mind, support for Option 2, as a reasonable first attempt, is being promoted.
